Japan spans 3,000 km from subarctic Hokkaidō to subtropical Okinawa, so "when to go" depends heavily on which island you mean. The main tourist corridor — Tokyo, the Japanese Alps, and Kansai — is temperate, with hot humid summers and crisp dry winters.

The country is exceptionally easy to travel independently: rail is fast and punctual, crime is low, and cash is still king outside big cities. English signage is common on transit but conversational English is not.

Citizens of 68 countries and regions (incl. US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) may enter visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. A passport valid for the stay is required; onward/return ticket may be checked.

Japan requires the Visit Japan Web pre-registration for immigration and customs QR codes — set it up before departure to skip the paper forms.

A few habits go a long way: no tipping (it can cause confusion), remove shoes where floors are raised, keep phone calls off trains, and don't eat while walking. Cash is handed over on the small tray, not directly.

Kansai (関西) is the region around Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. For travelers it's the most efficient part of Japan to see a lot without moving hotels — the three cities form a tight triangle linked by frequent trains, and Nara is a 45-minute day trip.

The ICOCA IC card works across every train, subway and bus in the region (and nationwide). For heavy sightseeing, the Kansai Thru Pass covers private railways and city subways the JR Pass doesn't.

Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital from 794 to 1868 and was famously spared WWII bombing, so its historic fabric survives intact. Seventeen sites carry UNESCO World Heritage status.

The catch is crowds: the marquee sights (Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Kiyomizu-dera) are genuinely packed by mid-morning. The city rewards early starts and picking neighborhoods over ticking off landmarks.

Late Nov (autumn foliage) and early Apr (cherry blossom) are the visual peak — and the most crowded and expensive. For a balance of decent weather and thinner crowds, aim for mid-Sept to mid-Oct or late Nov's shoulder.

Avoid summer if you can: July–August is hot and very humid. The rainy season (tsuyu) runs roughly early June to mid-July.

Kyoto is a bus-and-subway city more than a train one. Buses reach most temples but get stuck in traffic; the two subway lines are faster where they go. Tap an ICOCA card on everything.

Rental bikes are excellent on the flat grid, and the big three sight clusters (Higashiyama, Arashiyama, Fushimi) are each walkable once you arrive.

Kyoto's cuisine is refined and vegetable-forward: kaiseki (seasonal tasting menus), shōjin ryōri (Buddhist temple cooking), yudōfu hot-pot, and obanzai home-style dishes. Nishiki Market ("Kyoto's kitchen") is the classic grazing stroll.

• Book kaiseki and famous counters weeks ahead.
• Many temple-area restaurants close by 17:00–18:00.

The essential shortlist: Fushimi Inari (the vermilion torii gates — go at dawn), Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Arashiyama bamboo grove, Kiyomizu-dera, and the Gion district at dusk.

Kyoto is very safe, including at night and for solo travelers. The realistic concerns are tourist-density ones: heat exhaustion in summer, pickpocketing in packed sights, and respecting the photography rules in Gion (private alleys are now off-limits, with fines).
